Welcome to the new home of the Saint Brigand writings.

What are we doing here?

A little vision statement—

The dream has been that this space be for those who are trying to navigate the interface between intellectualism, growth, and faith. Through the instagram page, I’ve been thrilled to meet and connect with followers of the page who are in medicine, physics, theology, and pastoring. Also, I have had the pleasure of meeting folks that are in jobs outside of academia, or ministry — but here is the rub, I hear from both sides that these two worlds need more connection points. So far the instagram has served as the main engine of connection, but I have decided I want there to be a location on the website to house article resources for those who would like to engage with longer-form material.

I can only write as a lay-person, but since Bible college I have had a passion for connecting theological and philosophical concepts to the person who wants entrance ramps into these areas, but doesn’t quite know where to start. And so it is my aim, to connect you, the reader, to authors current and past that I have found helpful, engaging, and approachable. The articles I write will be from a perspective I understand best, being a creative, but I want to pull in the source material in a way that I believe will create a interesting synergy. That being said, I am currently also working on ways to create connection points for communication around these articles. At the current moment, the contact page will serve as a way for you to email me about these subjects and be able to ask questions or just talk generally about the material presented. The theme of Saint Brigand as a whole is ‘What is God doing on a cross?’ This theme, then, raying out into Christology, Discipleship, Eschatology, Politics, etc. And so the articles will attempt to be topically diverse, and in my best efforts, try to talk about he subjects in a cogent manner.

I know there is an importance for this kind of thing (even in the lay projects I am attempting to engage in) in today’s climate, and I am especially aware of ‘church-hurt’ as it has become popularly known (and that kind of injury has been part of my own Christian walk) and to borrow an ending line from Jonathan Sacks, “Religion has done harm; I acknowledge that. But the cure for bad religion is good religion, not no religion, just as the cure for bad science is good science, not the abandonment of science."

So in conclusion, the idea is to, in some small part, to do my part and take good theology and thought back to the public square as best as I can. I have been a pastor in the past, and so as ever, I endeavor to do so with an element of pastoral sensitivity.

If any of these prospects sound interesting to you, feel free to sign up for the newsletter (there is a sign-up block on the homepage). Via the newsletter I will deliver new articles to your inbox. I am also mulling over doing a ‘behind the curtain’ sort of regular email, discussing what my wife and I discuss through the week as we try to walk out our own theology, wrestle with topics and questions, and what we arrive at personally.

Anyway, as always, your support means a tremendous amount, and we as a little organization run out of our living room, couldn’t do this without you!

Much love,

Seth
